Frequently asked questions:
Boys or girls:
I get a lot of people interested in my puppies who ask a lot of the same questions or may have heard something that persuades them in one direction or another, so I am going to attempt to answer those for you here.
Q. I heard that females are better pets than males, is this true?
A. Males can be just as affectionate, loving and attentive as females. Each dog just like people have their own personality. Some are very active & playful & some may just want to be on your lap. It depends on each individual dog.
Q. Do males lift their leg & "pee" on everything?
A. Males lift their leg to "mark" their territory to announce to other males & females that the female in the home is theirs. If you do not have a female they should not lift their leg as that's to tell the others he has first breeding rights. If a male is nutured at a young age of around 4 month he will not be sexually mature enough for mating & will never lift their leg or mark. Females will also mark a territory as well.
Q. I understand that females should have 1 litter of their own to be "healthier".
A. This is not true & inexperienced breeders should leave the breeding up to a breeder who has at least 5 years of breeding behind them & preferably more in the breed they specialize in.

I have been breeding merles for a few years now & before taking them on I learned alot as many people who want a quick buck think they can put 2 dogs together & WHALA! they are going to just know how to be an expert at breeding & the poms know what to do. Breeding in itself takes a lifetime to learn to be a good breeder & merles are even trickier.
Because poms have so many colors in their background they can appear to be another color & still have a parent or past relative who has merle & may be put with another unknown merle genes carrier. This is very dangerous to the future of your puppies if you don't know for sure if there is merle in the genes of both parents. The only true way to tell is have them DNA tested.
Never take the word of a breeder on this as many will not tell you when you purchase a puppy that there is merle in the direct parents or their ancestors genes . If 2 merles are put together serious health risks can occur later in life. This is esspecially true if you have a white pom with blue eyes or even tiny specs of blue in their eyes. They may become blind & deaf after they turn one. All poms with any blue in their eyes does have merle in them & many merles do not do not have have blue.
Never breed two poms who have any blue in their eyes together as both have merle in their genes. Most merles in a litter have no visible merle so it's important to know if you want to breed your pom if it has merle in the genes. The poms shown below have a merle mother but no merle is shown on them. Showing how it does not always visibly show.
